February 15th 1965: The current Canadian flag is adopted

On this day in 1965, the red and white maple leaf design is adopted as the official flag of Canada. It replaced the old Canadian Red Ensign banner, thus removing the Union flag from Canada’s flag. The maple leaf design by George F.G Stanley and John Matheson was selected as the best design for the new flag. It was first used on this day in 1965, and the date is celebrated as National Flag of Canada Day.
