February 17th 1933: The Blaine Act ends Prohibition
On this day in 1933, the Blaine Act passed the United States Senate. The Act initiated the repeal of the 18th Amendment which banned alcohol and established Prohibition. It was sponsored by Senator John J Blaine (Republican - Wisconsin). The repeal was formally adopted as the 21st Amendment on December 5th 1933.
