July 5th 1996: Dolly the sheep cloned
On this day in 1996 the first cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep, was born at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland. The scientists who created her did not announce their success until February 1997. She was named Dolly as she was cloned from a cell from a mammary gland and one of the scientists commented “Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn’t think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton’s”. Dolly lived to the age of 6 and died on 14th February 2003.
