January 4th 1965: LBJ announces ‘Great Society’
On this day in 1965, the US President Lyndon Johnson announced his ‘Great Society’ policy during his State of the Union address. These measures were designed to tackle poverty and racial discrimination. They included the Medicare and Medicaid programmes and the groundbreaking 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act. The legislation translated the gains made in the Civil Rights movement into law and ensured greater equality for all American citizens.
